[ Closing her eyes for a brief moment, she nods her head in agreement. It's strange how telling someone this has helped her feel slightly better in a way -- most likely because he's the person she was designed or at least programmed to protect.
To know a human thinks that her life is important is soothing. ] That is what I believe to and why I could never trust Command again.
[ Now that her world's gone, now that they're all in the same dire straights — or not so dire, as the case may be, though Cain doesn't think it's wise to trust that this planet is any safer than their worlds. But he wonders, what does a machine do when it's betrayed? The golems he's familiar with followed the spells that laid out their purpose. Does an android have the same sort of directives, or does she have a choice about what she's going to do now?
And if she's going to seek out revenge after this betrayal... Well, he doesn't know how long ago it was for her, or what she's decided to do about that, either, but if she is, he's going to try to change her mind. ]
[ A good question and thankfully, she has an answer. ]
My purpose still stands when it comes to protecting humanity and so that is what I'm going to do. I might not be doing those guard duty type of jobs, I don't think I can follow another person's orders anymore, but I'll still help people. [ being an independent being like she always has been, ever since that fateful day. ]
Those're good intentions. More than we deserve, maybe.
[ A little soft — he's assuming "Command" was a bunch of humans, ordering her to her death. She's strong — and kind, to still want to protect humanity. To have been betrayed, and still want to help others, even if it is programming. ]
But don't you think that's taking a little too much on yourself?
[ He's one to speak, but hey, there's a word for what he is when it comes to risking his own life. ]
[ The response is quick, almost as if it's an automatic response to her and in a way, it is. ]
My design model might not be the best compared to others, but I am stronger than a human and taking me down isn't easy. I feel as if it should be a simple task to look after people.
[ He laughs, waving away her reassurances — not unkindly, but because she's thinking along the wrong lines. ]
We humans probably can't compare to an android at all when it comes to fighting. [ Not if they're like golems, creatures created just for battle, stronger and more durable and faster than a human could hope to be. ] But it's a lot, taking on the weight of the world. No one should have to bear that by themself.
That's right. Mentally, emotionally... No matter how strong you are, burdens are lighter if they're shared. And if they're not... it can crush you without you even realizing it.
[ It's kind of funny, him saying this, even he can realize it. He makes such a habit of not sharing burdens, taking everything onto his own shoulders... But that just means he knows how heavy these things can weigh. He's seen enough that even if he doesn't have much intention of following his own words, he knows they're true. He knows he's not someone who can escape these words, either, in the end. ]
That makes sense. I don't think you need to worry about my mental health though, it should be fine.
[ she's gone through a lot a made it out alive. having to look after a couple hundred shouldn't be too hard for her to do. ] There is no need for you to worry.
It's not... Well, that's not really what I'm worried about either.
[ "Mental health," like it's some clinical term, not just how she's doing in general. Stress and strain are worrisome, but it's something a bit different that he's not quite sure how to explain. The burden of being alone, of having no one else to turn to. Taking the world onto your shoulders without anyone to help share the weight. That crushing sense of loneliness when it seems like the rest of the world is against you...
He knows it all too well. He'd like, if he can, to keep anyone else from having to feel that.
He settles for giving her a small smile and holding out his hand. ]
Even if there's no need, I'll worry. So even if you can do it alone, remember that you don't have to. Even if I'm not needed, I'm here and I'll help you.
[ And how could she? Nobody has ever had to explain what a burden is to her and how it can take a toll on people. Being alone has never bothered her and that's because she is an android, emotions are still foreign to her and A2 is taking her time learning and actually understanding.
Glancing down at his hand, she places hers in his. ] There is where I say thank you, right?
Only if you want to. I'm not doing this because I want a thank you.
[ No, Cain doesn't need or even particularly want anyone's thanks. He does this because it's practically a compulsion, something he's driven to do after all the regret built up by the people he's lost. He wants to help people. He wants to keep them from being hurt. He doesn't want anyone else to lose someone the way he's lost. What he's doing is selfish, and he knows it. It's not deserving of any thanks.
But he still smiles at A2, clasping hands with hers. Even if she's some sort of machine, her hand is still warm, still feels soft and human. ]
I can try to explain if you want, but sometimes things like this are best taken on faith. I just don't want you to be alone.
[ She's just confused now, but she shrugs it off. There are just some things that will take a while for her to understand and that's okay in her mind -- it isn't like she is going to get into trouble for not knowing. ]
You're welcome. And since I'm not letting you be alone today, what do you say about trying some more food?
[ He gives her a wink, friendly and gregarious. It may be a little overbearing, but she seems like the kind of person who needs that if she's going to break out of her shell. Her metal-plated, fake skin shell? Well, Cain's not entirely sure, but he's going with it.
He can at least make sure that no matter what else happens, she has a good time at the party today. ]
