He doesn't want anyone else to lose someone the way he's lost. What he's doing is selfish, and he knows it. It's not deserving of any thanks.
But he still smiles at A2, clasping hands with hers. Even if she's some sort of machine, her hand is still warm, still feels soft and human. ]
I can try to explain if you want, but sometimes things like this are best taken on faith. I just don't want you to be alone.
